The Pakistani Prime MInister, just elected is willing to take Musharraf to trial for treason. In the murky political picture of Pakistan such bold action should be rewarded. But exactly what are the treasonous actions of the former head of state?
Indeed, Musharraf did subvert the 'democratic' process, ousting one duly elected figure, disbanding the party in the government and even imprisoning a rebellious judiciary.
But Treason? Yes they say, for imposing emergency rule to appropriate power. But the Judges cannot just take revenge on the former dictator. Only the state can bring those charges.
In many ways, the judiciary is overstepping their office much in the same way that Musharraf overstepped his.
Among the accusations now levvied against him, is the one that landed him in house arrest in the first place: the failure to provide adequate security for Benazir Bhutto. The second of course is the detainment of the judiciary we spoke of above.
