All those people who have so far felt inadequate or lazy because they did not adopt a serious running regimen, can now breath a sigh of relief.
Newly released information is focusing on the benefits of power walking, which appears to be more and more an equivalent to its more vigorous counterpart.
Evidence shows that brisk walking can reduce diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol, just as much as running.
10,045 walkers participated in the study. In fact researchers have found that when brisk walking, the same exact energy is expended, and it led to comparable reductions in diseases as if the subject had been running.
The study conducted evaluated walkers by distance, unlike previous studies which founded their data on time.
In fact the tabulation of data shows the following:
-hypertension was reduced by almost double if walking in respect to running: 4.2 to 7.2 respectively.
-high cholesterol was reduced by double too, in just about the same percentages.
-the risk of first time diabetes was lowered in almost equal amounts, whereas
-coronary disease again, showed a benefit that was almost double in walking vs. running.
Subjects studied were between 18 and 80 years old, with the majority in the 40-50 bracket.
