After a successful trial in the United States, Facebook is now going to charge Facebook users in the UK when they message a celebrity or a person who they do not know.
In some cases the charges can be as high as 10 pounds.
The internet giant contends that the measure was needed to stem the unusual flow of messages from strangers.
People who want to message strangers can now do so for about 71 pence to send the message directly to the unknown's inbox, along with an automatic alert, or send the message for free to a lesser visible folder. Most facebook users do not even know that this folder exists.
Most users can pay the fee online with a credit card if they are not minors.
The company is also testing a sliding scale fee that is commensurate to the celebrity's visibility and popularity. For example messaging an olympic diver might cost around 10.68 pounds sterling, while the rapper Snoop Doggy's fees might run to about 10.08 pounds sterling.
The company also says that this measure will curb spam.
