FLOODS IN ARGENTINA MAKE MORE VICTIMS

The deadly floods that have hit Argentina have made more victims this weekend.

Already 57 people have died in the province of Buenos Aires.  Hundreds of people have been displaced.

The worst of the flood impacted the city of La Plata, where the majority of the victims died.  Six more people died in Buenos Aires proper.

Most of the people who died did so trying to escape the raging waters by scaling trees and roofs and were electrocuted by power wires.

This disaster was the worse ever to hit the capital province.  A flood of this magnitude had never been experienced in the area, leaving many unprepared.

At the height of the rains, more than 15 centimeters of rain fell on the capital city of Buenos Aires.

More than 100,000 homes were destroyed by the flood waters.  In many areas there is no power, although the worse of the flooding has stopped and the waters almost totally receded.

Trucks trying to bring aid to La Plata were attacked last week by thieves.

20 people are still missing.  Most of the victims in La Plata have been identified.

In some areas of La Plata residents have created watchdog groups to protect themselves from looting and crime.  A few commercial activities and grocery stores have already been looted.
