The past couple of weeks have witnessed a very unusual spate of violence against Muslims in Burma. The violence has in turn ignited protests in the Muslim country of Indonesia which has resulted in the death of eight buddhist monks in Indonesia.
The eight Buddhists, who are not connected to the runaway faction of buddhist monks that have caused the violence against Muslims in Burma, were killed at an Indonesian detention center near Belawan Port Immigration Centre in North Sumatra province.
In Burma, 43 Muslims were killed and many other injured when a group of renegade monks mobilized the community to strike against the local muslims in the town of Meiktila. Many muslim homes and businesses were also destroyed. Almost 11,376 muslim citizens were left homeless by the violence.
The violence begun with an alleged incident of fraud by a muslim owned jewelry store owner, but authorities in Burma believe that the incident was falsely created to spread the violence, which later was attributed to a well orchestrated plan by a renegade group of buddhist monks.
At that time, the police in Burma was accused of failing to intervene to stop the violence. Human Right Watch was given a report of the accusation and the agency is investigating.
Photos of the buddhist monks' rampage were trasmitted on television and printed in newspapers, alerting the Indonesian locals of the violence in Burma.
Many asylum seekers are fleeing Burma and arriving in Indonesia following the violent persecution of the muslim population.
