Five Indian UN peacekeepers have been killed by rebels in the South Sudan today.
They were killed in an ambush near Jonlei. The peacekeepers were escorting a convoy when they came under rebel fire.
Jonglei has recently seen a resurgence of violence, fueled by ethnic unrest. Even after independence was declared in July 2011, the area did not settle into any lasting peace. Most of the unrest is also located where the UN peacekeepers are stationed.
The UN chief H. Johnson has declared that a strong government response is expected to quell the rebel fighting. A powerful rebel leader, David Yau Yau is the chief responsible for the violence, which has intensified since March.
