Is the internet the police tool of the future? The answer is most probably yes. Many police offices are now using the internet and facebook as tools to apprehend criminals.
But nothing speaks louder than the case that was just wrapped up this week, when a suspect who had eluded capture for a month, was caught in the span of just one hour, when his picture was offered on the internet.
The criminal in question had mugged a victim in Brooklyn, New York, on March 9. For the whole time the suspect remained a fugitive the police seemed to be unable to locate him.
Then someone suggested opening the case to the public. They posted a video of the suspect who was readily identifiable by the t-shirt he was wearing which had his fraternity's letters on it. A commenter on Gawker posted a link to the suspect's facebook page and posted an equivalent of an internet BOLO by labeling the link 'secretsout'.
No sooner was the picture up, that Gawker members and other internet users identified him as Aidan Folan, age 21, the perpetrator of the violent mugging in the subway system in Brooklyn.
