A little known case was just concluded yesterday with a sentence to 16 in prison for an army man convicted of trying to sell secrets to an undercover FBI agent posing as a Russian spy.
The man, private William C. Millay, was known to have extreme right wing ideology and was a white supremacist.
He was also dishonorably discharged.
The army officer apparently had gotten fed up with the military in which he served and decided to betray his country by selling secrets to any enemy agent, even if his actions would have resulted in US deaths. The panel analyzing the officer for trial fitness argued that he has emotional problems and that he could be rehabilitated.
Millay was approached by an undercover FBI agent after he posted a request in a Russian publication for information on how to join the Russian military. He also tried repeatedly to contact the Russian Embassy.
MIllay, during a conversation that was secretly taped, told the undercover agent that he would be willing to work for the Russian government, if they paid him enough to warrant his betrayal. He told the FBI agent that he was ready to disclose information on the Warlock Duke jamming system that the US military employs when trying to sweep for IEDs.
Millay subsequently reported to his superior about the encounter in an attempt to deflect suspicion if the meeting had been discovered.
After setting up a drop for the receipt of the secret information, the FBI moved in to arrest Millay after he left a white envelope with information about the F-22 fighter and the jamming system in a designated trash bin.
A search of his quarters revealed his affiliation in the National Socialists Movement of America. He also had two Nazi tattoos on his bodies.
Although the Army division where he served just branded him a renegade and traitor, there is reason to believe that right wing extremists are playing a larger role than they did in the past, when they chiefly worked behind prison walls or plied the drug trade. Even though Millay was probably working on his own, there has been a resurgence of white supremacist activity which seems to have connected to other separatists groups.
