RUSSIA'S HOMOPHOBIC STANCE CAUSES ANOTHER DEATH : GAY MAN KILLED IN THE KAMCHATKA

The hatred for gay people in Russia seems to be coming to the fore as more and more Russians are trying to make inroads for the gay community and freedom of speech.

There is a growing sense that the recent repressions are actually emboldening the gay community, which in turn could lead to more homophobic violence.

But in the far provinces, things are not so clear cut.

Just yesterday, Russian villagers have killed a man in the Kamchatka in what is believed to be another hate crime. The victim, who was gay, was cornered in the village of Zaporozhye, and beaten to death.

The criminals who beat him then tried to tamper with the man's body by putting him in his car and setting it on fire with petrol.   The gay man was a deputy director of a local airport.

Authorities have already determined that it was a case of homophobia, which is quite an admission, since until now, such matters as hate crimes against gays would not have been disclosed.

However, there are no hate crime laws in Russia.

This is the second hate crime against gays in Russia in less than a month.  A 23 year old was also beaten to death and sodomized with objects in the city of Volgograd.

The Russian parliament however, is only making thing worse by proposing just recently a law that would ban any literature which speaks of gay matter, officially sanctioning the ostracism and condemnation of the gay community already deeply rooted in Russian society.  This law has already been ratified in certain parts of Russia, including the northern city of St. Petersburg.
