Another small child has died at the hand of his parents. Eight year old Gabriel Fernandez died a horrible death last week after years of beatings and torture.
The appalling thing is that everyone expected him to die. Everyone knew that he was being brutally savaged for years and yet no one was able to see him safe.
Yes, you read right, everyone knew. His teacher, his relatives and his friends.
He lived in a household with his mother and her boyfriend.
Now the people of the town where he lived are asking for an investigation and justice.
But where was the community when all this was happening? For years, no less, they simply stood by, filing reports to the authorities, but never confronted the parents about it. All the blame is being foisted upon the authorities, who in truth should have been able to protect the child. But then what about all of those people who knew? Is making a report enough?
The little boy had been living with his granparents until his mother, Pearl Fernandez, was able to regain custody of him.
Now the mother is accused of letting her boyfriend kill the boy, barely six months after she regained custody.
Apparently Child Protective Services had received many reports for months that should have caused some sort of action to prevent the death. Apparently when the teacher reported that the child had been shot in the face with a BB gun and had paired ecchimoses on his eyes the Agency did nothing in response.
When the child was found, he was lying on the floor dying. His body was beaten so badly that almost all bones were broken. He was covered in burn marks and had ligature marks and torture signs on his body. He died Friday at the hospital.
