Maoist rebels attacked civilians in the city of Raipur on Saturday causing 23 deaths.
The militant Maoist have long been in conflict with the military over the rural areas in central and eastern India.
32 more people were injured in the attack.
The bomb and gun attack focused on two politicians who had set up an anti-insurgent group to contrast the rebels, Nand Kumar Patel and Mahendra Karma, who both were killed in the incident.
Some of the victims were brought to New Dehli for treatment.
In 2009, government forces launched a counter offensive against the Maoist rebels, called "operation green hung", but the poorly trained officers had a very hard time contrasting the well trained rebels, so that the effort was not very successful.
