Japan has often been critized for its deaf ear towards conservation efforts that aim at saving whales.
In the latest development, however, there seems to be a complete disconnect between Japanese sensibilities and the preservation of any type of whale.
A company called Michinoky Farm, based in Tokyo, is offering dog treats online made with the meat of an endangered species of whale, the North Atlantic fin whale. The snack is described as low calorie, low fat, high protein.
The product targets affluent Japanese who want to show off their wealth, says Nanami Kurasawa of a watchdog conservation group.
The same company also offers products for dogs that contains Mongolian horsemeat and kangaroo meat. The whale chews come in three sizes, the largest of which is a half kilo bag for 3,780 yen (approx. 40$).
Whale meat in general is now declining in popularity in Japan, however Japanese do reject outright foreign efforts to curtail their whale hunts which they insist are part of Japanese ancient tradition.
