Carotenoids
have been known to offer protection from cancer (but only in natural
form), and to enhance vision, but now there are study results that could
point to a lower risk of breast cancer.
Studies
that measured carotenoid levels in women's blood, found that women with
high carotenoid levels were the ones with the lowest breast cancer
risk.
The
correlation seemed to be even more effective for those who were
smokers, appearing to offer further benefits to those who do.
Carotenoids
are what give fruits and vegetables their yellow, red, and orange
colors. Some of the best sources are carrots, yams, spinach, kale red
bell peppers and winter squash.
The
research also pointed out that the carotenoid levels are particularly
beneficial to prevent those type of cancers that do not need estrogen to
grow.
The study was effected through a trial of 3000 women with breast cancer and 4000 women who were not affected by breast cancer.
