In a eerily similar way, a building in Cambodia where shoes were produced has collapsed, just like the one in Bangladesh a few weeks ago.
The collapse occurred due to weight overload on the roof where equipment was stored. Although the building was made of bricks and steel trusses, the excessive weight causes the roof to cave in, showering the workers with bricks and boxes and pallets stored in the floor above the main production area.
One perished in the collapse, although six more people were seriously injured.
The Cambodian garment and shoe industry is one of the largest sectors in the country. The wages in Cambodia are similar to those in India, but only slightly higher. Whereas a Bangladeshi woman makes about 38$ a month, Cambodian workers earn about 61-70$.
The factory is owned by an Taiwanese company, Wing Star shoes. One of the brands that uses this companies for its supply is Asics.
