Saudi Arabia this week has been hit by torrential rains. The alluvial disaster happened in the western city of Jeddah and its immediate area.
24 people have been found dead and 4 other are still missing. Rescue teams have saved 1,451 people, while helicopters have rescued almost 500 independently.
Jeddah and the surrounding province have been hit by unusually high amounts of rain this week. In one instance, almost 4 inches fell in less than three hours.
Some attribute the flooding to a lack of drainage system in the greater city area. In fact some of the pictures taken in the area show a veritable river of water carrying cars and people downstream.
Some businesses were able to board up their structures before the water rushed in.
This problem in Jeddah is not entirely novel. In 2009, almost 100 people died because of flooding. Even then, most people pointed the finger at inadequate draining systems.
