NELSON MANDELA IN SERIOUS CONDITION IN AN HOSPITAL IN PRETORIA

Nelson Mandela is in a hospital in Pretoria in serious condition, for what is believed to be a return of the respiratory infection he has been suffering from for some time.

He was brought into the hospital after his condition deteriorated visibly at 1:30 in the morning.  He is still in serious condition, although he seems to have improved somewhat from the time he was brought into the hospital.

President Mandela has had his share of illness in the past year, with an operation in December to remove gallstones and the lung infection, which prompted an 18 day stay in the hospital.

Everyone is wishing Madiba a speedy recovery.

Although the aging premiere has not been seen in public since 2010, he had been healthy and stable until last year's events.

Mandela has had his share of problems with lung complications following a bout of tubercolosis contracted during his very long detention of 27 years by the South African government.  Tubercolosis causes scarring of the lungs, and predisposes the individual to infections later in life.

Another health problem he suffered due to his imprisonment was light sensitivity, due to the years of forced labor in the quarries, where the sun reflecting on the stones damaged his eyes.
