EUROPE'S WILD SWING : FRENCH FAR RIGHT SHOWS ITS MUSCLE ON MAY DAY

If anyone wondered whether right wing extremism was an isolated incident in Europe, they would be woefully wrong.

Enter France, which just recently was the location where sometimes violent homophobic demonstrations went on for days as the vote on gay marriage was going through the FRench legislature.

These days, the republic is theatre to many things, and not all of them democratic.

Today is the First of May, or May Day.  The day that celebrates workers and laborers worldwide.

And what is going on in the middle of Paris?

The far right, in large numbers, demonstrating and marching in support of their extreme right wing party, the France National Front, or FN, that has enjoyed a surge in support lately, mainly due to their anti-immigration ideology.

Marine Le Pen, carrying on the legacy of her father, headed the procession.  She later gave a speech in front of the Palace de l'Opera`.

Among her utterances : "I understand our countrymen when they say they’re losing confidence; that they no longer believe in the political class.” Translation: we would like a government led by right wing representatives who would clean up all this mess, starting with the immigrants.

And they have support, to the tune of 23% according to the latest polls.  This percentage might not seem very high, but Sarkozy's stands at 34%.  And that gives Ms. Le Pen a very good shot at the premiership.

FN has also capitalized on the anti-gay sentiment we just spoke about.
